Predictive Wear Wins Southwest Indiana Pitch Competition Showcasing Indiana Entrepreneurs

JASPER, Ind. – Last night, Southwest Indiana showcased entrepreneurs and startups across the state through the second annual Dubois County Pitch Competition at Brew in Jasper, Ind.

Individuals and teams shared their business, innovation, or entrepreneurial idea before a panel of judges in hopes of earning prize money to invest in their startup. The competition allowed 12 entrepreneurs four minutes to pitch their idea and two minutes to answer questions. Judges scored companies based on team, market fit, product/solution, customer traction or roadmap and their overall presentations. Judges included Jason Salstrom, Director of Purdue Foundry at Westgate; Brenda Stallings, CEO at Matrix Integration; and Katie Birge, Executive Director at Launch Indy.

“With an even bigger crowd than last year, we were able to build upon last year’s success as we continue to see increased interest and excitement surrounding entrepreneurship here in Dubois County,” said Stallings.

Predictive Wear was the startup that impressed the judges and earned first place, receiving a $4,000 prize. Second place, and a $2,000 prize, went to Zoro. Third place, and a $1,000 prize, went to Potter Industries.

Companies or ideas that were pitched at the competition include:

  • Adventure Field Guides – a Software as a Service company that helps cities and counties leverage their outdoor tourism
  • Borsa – makes listening to earnings calls as easy as listening to your favorite podcast by taking every earnings call into one easy-to-use app
  • Clear Creek Natural Products – provides premium dog foods by manufacturing fresh-baked Farmer’s Blend Recipe Dog Food Bars
  • Forge and Temper – an idea to allow homebuyers to take virtual reality house tours before visiting them, saving them money spent on traveling, and lowering the burden of finding a good house in just one weekend
  • Ghost – a concept for an accountability device for personnel subject to hazardous and IDLH atmospheres. It would provide a forward horizontal view of the user taking into account the GPS location of the device and displaying the location using Augmented Reality
  • Heliponix – creator of the GroPod™, an IoT enabled aeroponic appliance that grows leafy green vegetables and dwarf varieties of specialty crops
  • IRLCommunication – allows content to be dynamic after an email has been deployed
  • Live Music Tutor – an online interactive music platform that connects instructors, students and music enthusiasts around the globe in one convenient place to share their passion
  • Opportunity – a ride board app that safely allows college students to post open seats on trips they are already making for other students to split the fuel cost and eliminate redundant cars on the road making duplicate trips
  • Potter Industries – provide smart monitoring vision systems to ensure flock health, minimize losses, and provide peace of mind for farmers and flock owners
  • Predictive Wear – brings the gold standard of therapy for CVI, compression socks, into the 21st Century by embedding sensors into the fabric of the socks, continuously collecting data and offering this data to physicians, patients and insurers
  • Zoro – creator of Zoro Card, the debit card that builds credit

In 2017, a total of $8,000 was awarded to four companies. Heliponix, one of the winners from 2017, used the funding to manufacture beta units for market validation. Scott Massey, Heliponix CEO and Founder has since raised follow-on funding through the Elevate Purdue Foundry Fund.

This competition was sponsored by Current Blend and Elevate Southwest Indiana, a partnership between Elevate Ventures and the Economic Development Coalition of Southwest Indiana dedicated to promoting entrepreneurship in the six-county region.
